- Q: What is Libris Design?
A: Libris Design is a library facility planning information system which includes a website with recent
information on facility planning topics, a database of recently constructed California public libraries, an
area for users to communicate with each other, user help documentation and a trial version of the Libris
Design database.
- Q: What is the Libris Design Database?
A: The Libris Design database is a Microsoft Access database which can be used to create library building programs
and furniture and equipment cost estimates, plan renovations, and produce budgets for library building projects.
Users tailor generic library models into building programs for their own specific projects.
- Q: What are the advantages of Libris Design?
A: Libris Design saves time and money. It can be used to develop detailed accurate planning documents with or without
the assistance of a building consultant. It can also be used to share comprehensive planning information with the
design team and to work collaboratively with staff and other constituents.
- Q: Who developed Libris Design?
A: Libris Design was conceived by Richard B. Hall of the California State Library who collaborated with Science
Applications International Corporation (SAIC) on the design of the database and website. The project is funded with a
LSTA grant from the California State Library managed by the City of Cerritos Library.
- Q: What does Libris Design cost?
A: The information on the website is provided free of charge to anyone. The database is available as a free 30-day trial
version on the website. The fully functional database is only available to individuals who have taken the two day Libris
Design workshop.
- Q: What kind of PC & software do I need?
A: The system requirements for using the Libris Design database are detailed here. The
recommended minimum system configuration is a Pentium III 500 MHz processor with 128 MB of memory and 100 MB of free
disk space using Windows 98, 2000 or XP. Current versions of the database will operate on MS Access 2000 or more
current versions. There is no Apple Macintosh version.
- Q: Who provides training for Libris Design?
A: Infopeople offers workshops in California. Out of state training can be contracted through the Libris Design Project
Manager. See this page for more information on contracting. Check the Infopeople website for the next scheduled workshop.
- Q: Where do I get a manual to help with the use of Libris Design?
A: Detailed context sensitive help is imbedded in the database. Additional user help documentation, troubleshooting
documents, and cheat sheets are available on the Libris Design CD which is distributed at the workshops.
- Q: How can I communicate with other Libris Design users?
A: The Libris Design website provides several opportunities, including a
discussion list
and a blog, for users to communicate with each other.
- Q: What if I have a problem using Libris Design?
A: Individuals who taken the workshop have access to e-mail help via a password protected location on the website. The
project cannot support use of the database by individuals who have not taken the two-day workshop.
- Q: Will there be enhancements to the Libris Design database?
A. The database is updated on a regular basis including cost revisions, new generic user models, added inventory items
and current technology, as well as modifications to the user interface screens and database functionality. The next
version of Libris Design will be Libris Design 5.0, scheduled for release in the Fall of 2005.
- Q: Is there a warranty provided to users of Libris Design?

- Q: How many people have taken the Libris Design training and are actually using it?
A: Approximately 500 individuals have taken the training. There are currently over 600 individuals who have registered
as users to receive the Libris Design e-mail updates.
